New Citadel
Commissioned by the Salvation Army a design was developed to replace an existing Citadel building constructed in the 1930’s. The building suffered from a state of disrepair and had significant dilapidation issues.
The location was a tight town centre site which gave some challenging site planning issues to accommodate all of the required functions that included a children’s daycare facility. It had built neighbours to two sides and an open space plus main highways.
The building design also needed to reflect the care in the community ethos of the church and they facilitated community lunches for those in need plus a mum’s & tots group and therefore the building had to have an open welcoming feel at its entrance. This was a key brief issue.
A strong aesthetic was developed for this building and the desire for clear engagement within the community at the adjacent square where people can sit and gather.
